A Swine Flu Scare

I absolutely hate getting sick. There is nothing worse than coming down with a sickness that is unwanted and unexpected. Getting sick from someone who you know is already sick is not as bad as contracting a deadly virus in a national pandemic. After a long weekend in Cholla Bay, Mexico in Rocky point, we packed up and drove home in time for class on Monday. This vacation was in April 2009. On the drive home, I realized that I was getting a bad sore throat and that I was beginning to become sick. As soon as I got home, my sister ran to me and said, “Hey did you hear about the swine flu? It is killing all these people around the world right now”. I responded, “No? What is the swine flu? I do feel sick?” I thought for sure something was wrong and that my life was in serious danger. My sister suggested that I should go to campus health and get tested to see if I have it. I quickly went online to check the Internet to see what the symptoms were. According to Webmd.com “The Novel H1N1 or “swine flu” is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. This virus is spreading from person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization signaled that a pandemic of novel H1N1 flu was underway. This virus was originally referred to as "swine flu" because laboratory testing showed that many of the genes in this new virus were very similar to influenza viruses that normally occur in pigs “swine” in North America. But further study has shown that this new virus is very different from what normally circulates in North American pigs. It has two genes from flu viruses that normally circulate in pigs in Europe and Asia and bird “avian” genes and human genes. Scientists call this a "quadruple reassortant" virus.” I looked at my computer screen in disbelief as my symptoms matched the ones on Webmd.com. I quickly called my buddy Blake, who had just dropped me off to head up to Tempe to make his class he had to attend. “Hey man, can you cruise back here and give me one of those “B-12” shots you got from Mexico”, I said. He ended up sticking a sharp needle in my ass as while he injected the Vitamin B Complex into my bloodstream. It was very painful and blood started squirting everywhere as I pounded a full Rockstar Energy Drink. After he left, I went directly to campus health to see if I had the H1N1 virus. The employees had me put on a facemask so that others wouldn’t get sick if I really did have the virus. The nurses and doctors were more nice than usual—as I sipped the ice cold Gatorade that the nurse gave me. Then before I knew it, there was a q-tip that was longer than both of my index fingers put together. She forced the gigantic q-tip straight up my nose. It hurt so badly, I thought that the q-tip was poking my brain. After what felt like a lifetime, the doctor pulled the q-tip from out of my nose and took the sample to test to see if I test positive or negative for swine flu. I was so scared for my life; I don’t think I have prayed harder in my life. The doctor finally came to inform me of the results after thirty minuets or so. The results came out negative for H1N1, which was the best news anyone had ever told me. This was a very scary moment in my life because I did not know how bad it had spread in the United States and throughout the world. I was very fortunate to get rid of the sickness that I had and move on with my life. Human infections with the new H1N1 virus “swine flu” are ongoing in the United States today, but the media says that the worst is yet to come this fall. Most people who have become ill with this new virus have recovered without requiring medical treatment. Today, the H1N1 Vaccine is available at vaccination clinics for those who are applicable. Unfortunately, Three people have died already in Pima County, which means that everyone needs to try to stay away from sickness as much as possible!

A Personal Experience In My Own Backyard

A recent personal experience happened over this last weekend that changed my life. This Saturday was the first time I moved my drum set out into my backyard to play with my friend josh. I hadn’t slept much the night before, but I was determined to play a little pool gig with my buddy in front of some friends. My house was cleaner than it had ever been this entire semester. My all black drum set shined in the sun, underneath a custom gazebo that was built by our landlord; in which, it is located perfectly in the southwest corner of the backyard. Shockingly, my drum set fit perfect in the area that was pretty much made for a drum set or an additional bar; besides, the bar that is located in the west portion of our backyard is perfect. Six stools surround the bar that sits perfectly under a large gazebo that gives a tropical feeling when I am in my backyard.

Sadly, the pool was unpleasantly cold and there were a few clouds in the sky Saturday morning. But we did not let that stop us; instead, we proceeded to Axis liquor store on Broadway to pick up a Keystone Light frosted keg, four bags of ice, and some red Dixie cups. However, a major conflict stopped us from making our house turn into a party because we couldn’t find anybody with a tap. In addition, the rest of Greek life was in no condition to day party because of the fierce hangover from the night before. But it didn’t matter, not on this day. All I needed was my close homies and the opportunity to play music with josh in my beautiful backyard.

My buddy Blake, who is one of my best friends that I went to my high school with, came down for the weekend to come down to visit from Arizona State University in Tempe. I always go up to Tempe because it is my home so I always see my “Corona” high school crew; nonetheless, it is great when they come down to Tucson to visit me. Other brothers that are in my fraternity came over as well and we began to do the dew. Even better, my other good friend Ryan from Corona as well, that I have known since 6th grade; in which, he stopped by to join in with Josh and myself on our jam session. It was truly epic. We jammed out in harmony to songs that we had previously practiced for many years now. My spirits have never been so lifted. I felt as if my conscience was exactly where it needed to be on this particular day. I was meant to experience this for a reason. My beat flowed perfectly with the guitar legend, JForn. His amazing shredding styles flowed just right with my fills and transfers—it was truly a masterpiece. When Ryan joined in with his acoustic guitar, it was amazing to see this trio play so well together after along few weeks of not jamming whatsoever. Life was good and the tap for the keg eventually showed up and the party was then moved to later that night. Overall, the weekend was a personal life changing experience that wasn’t too much for me to grasp because it was exactly what my life needed more than anything else.

The Wonders of Planet Earth

There is no other series on television that compares to Planet Earth on the Discovery Channel. For me, this is one of the most cherished shows that I have ever watched in my life. There is nothing like it. I have never been more amazed by human beings more than the experts that film and produce this phenomenal show. If I had to choose a channel to watch for the rest of my life it would definitely be the Discovery Channel because there is so much out in the world that has never been discovered. These experts use the most advanced technology and resources to their advantage in order to get the shots that they do. The voice of the narrator is so calm and sincere that it allows me to properly enjoy the various scenes that are captured.

Being able to witness things on the television screen that has never been caught on camera before is by far one of the most best feelings ever. Although I am not out there in the nature when it is being filmed, it is a rewarding feeling to know that there are human beings out there that sacrifice their lives to show the rest of the world what is out there. The high definition cameras really add something extra special to the effects that are portrayed in the series. The different faces of the earth are astonishing, especially the way that the filmmakers present Planet Earth. I particularly enjoy when they slow down the speed of a certain scene when it is to fast to grasp it. My favorite scene would have to be when the great white shark powerfully emerges out of the ocean and swallows a sea otter—with its gigantic body flying through the air. When the scene is slowed down tremendously, the audience is able to see things that would never be seen otherwise. If I was on a boat in the ocean and saw that same great white shark eat the sea otter, I would barely be able to grasp on what just happened. That is what makes this show so amazing and the highest quality programming in the world.

A solid eleven episodes and other bonus material has been recorded thus far. From the North Pole to the South Pole, from mountains to the deep ocean—coverage on these hard to reach parts in the world has never been covered more perfectly. Other areas of the world such as deserts, jungles, seasonal forests, caves, fresh water, shallow sea, and the Great Plains are all covered in these eleven episodes. If you have not seen Planet Earth episodes, I highly recommend that you check your listings with your cable provider, rent, or buy the Ultimate Planet Earth Experience DVD set at your local store. Learning more about our earth is one of my favorite things. Although traveling the world is not made easily available to me at this stage in my life, watching Planet Earth has given me a much better understanding of what thrives in this magnificent world.

My Desire to be a Little Boy Again

As a child, I was constantly provoking curiosity, wonder, and intellectual engagement. My imagination as a child was so extraordinary, that it is hard to grasp that mentality today. I remember being so intrigued with physical properties that displayed things such as color, light, reflection, sound, and motion. Everything was so new and fresh. In fact, I was a scientist—always full of wonder and observing closely on my own theories about how the world works. New objects that I would find everyday would intrigue me in ways that I would never think about at my age today. I remember learning was so much fun, especially when cartoon images and commercial figures suggest that learning should always be compelling. For example, the PBS show Barney, was a purple dinosaur that would interact with all the kids—providing a new lesson each day. Learning from my parents, teachers and television encouraged this natural movement within myself to investigate and imagine about the things that motivated me to learn more about this world. At times, I desire to hop in a time machine and go back to when I was a little boy and rethink and relive those moments that provoked me to think that way. Everyday was a new challenge and experience. One thing that I wish I did not have today that I didn’t have back then was stress. There was nothing to stress about when I was a little boy. Everything was so joyful and fun. Nothing provoked me to become stressed out and irritated. I was more worried about exploring and playing than worrying about everyday struggles of life. The natural world was so captivating, that negative issues going on in the world did not matter to me whatsoever. Wonderful aromas that filled the air was much more delightful to me when I was younger. I think they were more pleasant when I was younger because I had to fully adapt to the smells that I encountered. Sounds always were the most interesting to me because they brought so much power and emotion. I remember stopping to notice the sounds around me that I would deeply investigate because of the certain way that it had sounded. Sometimes, I would create noise whenever possible because it made me feel big in my little body. I remember getting my parents pots and pans out of the kitchen, setting them up like a miniature drum set, and then banging them as hard as I could because of the way that it made me feel. Making loud sounds use to be such a powerful experience for me. These elements surrounded me when I was growing up and sparked my most deep imaginations within my brain that calmed my spirits instead of provoking stress. From time to time, I can make myself think like a little kid, but it doesn’t compare to how I really used to think. I desperately desire to be the little boy that I used to be.

Notes on the film: Stranger with a Camera

O’Conner got shot with a whole in his chest in 1967. He was a prominent Canadian filmmaker; in which, he was shot and killed, known as the “Stranger with a camera”.

Growing up in the coalfields, people lived very different lives.

The common experience of the human race in different parts in the world was a main theme that O’Conner was trying to express, (he was the front man).

Anne O’Conner tells stories about her childhood, showed a girl how a camera worked let the girl take pics of him. He had sensitivity for the people he was filming.

The miners had been very badly treated in Kentucky and they wanted to show this, “was this the American Dream?” =Some where giving them shit because they were showing the rest of the country there problems, and others were glad to show because they wanted to change it.

It was brought and traced to O’Conner where he was shot in the chest because of all the people coming in with cameras.

A Morning Ride

Loud roaring sounds had woken me, with thunderous sounds roaring from several dirt bikes, sand rails, and quads that screamed across the Buttercup sand dunes. I unzipped my sleeping bag and threw on some riding pants, long socks and a jersey. Hydration and food was necessary before a long day of riding. Slowly, my family and family friends in our camp started waking up. Surprisingly my hangover this morning was not as bad as I had expected it to be. I gathered my motorcycle helmet, goggles, chest pad, and gloves. We quickly ate the most appetizing chorizo burritos that my mom made us.

We were so excited to start the day off with a morning dirt bike ride. The first ride of the day is only for the early birds that have the ambition to go hard because everything is so fast paced. Usually one or two riders in our group are already warming up their dirt bikes before I can even put my riding boots on. It is straight though, because it motivates everyone to get ready faster.

An extremely large smile formed on my face once I had finished getting everything together. I gained my composure as I walked across the rippled sand towards my dirt bike. After topping off my gas tank with some needed gasoline, I twisted the cap tightly and gripped my hands tightly around the handle grips. While I pulled in the clutch, I raised my right foot with my left touching the ground. However, kick starting the bike was not necessarily easy. In order for the dirt bike to properly warm up, I had to turn the choke on. My bike revved up after I kick started it while everyone else in our group started getting situated with their dirt bikes, quads and sand rails.

I turned off my choke and strapped my helmet tightly, with the strap fitting tightly underneath my chin. Everyone anxiously started looked around at each other to make sure everybody who was coming was not left behind. And before I knew it I had already cycled through the first four gears, going as fast as my bike would let me. Everyone headed towards the first set of sand dunes to make one final stop before we started riding gnarly lines around the mysterious Californian/Mexican Sand Dunes. The wind from the night before erased all of the tracks from the day before leaving no other trails to be found.

As I ventured out towards the first set of dunes—I began to get more comfortable on my bike having so much fun while doing it. After popping a wheelie and holding it for longer than I ever had in my life, I brought my bike down onto two wheels turning towards a perfect bush jump that I had lined out in my run. I preloaded and hit the perfectly formed hill with a small desert bush on top of it. Flying high in the air on my dirt bike created an amazing adrenaline rush that got me so amped up as I landed smoothly on the sand. We all finally regrouped at the first set of dunes, realizing that it was already time for a beer break. To be continued…

HBO's Entourage Season Finale Episode Recap

The finale of Entourage was one hell of an episode to end the season. The anticipation had been building up for six days straight. The beginning of the episode starts off with the Vince, Turtle, Eric, and Drama talking with one another about the day ahead of them. Vince has been constantly struggling with his entourage to hangout with him because they all let their busy lives take over their plans with Vince. Eric has been constantly fighting with himself and his love life with Sloan. After compelling her to express his love for her, she in return, was steamed that he tried taking her away from the person she was seeing. Eric completely threw me off when proposed to Sloan, expressing his love for her, telling her that he would do anything for her as he slid the ring engagement ring on her finger. In addition, I was surprised that she accepted his proposal to make them officially engaged. Turtle has been fighting his personal emotions with his girlfriend that flew away to New Zealand for a movie shoot there. Therefore Turtle ended up getting on a plane for fourteen hours, squished in between two obese women on a plane. Drama had been contemplating with his acting career, specifically, his try-outs for Melrose Place with the CBS Network. In return, the network wanted to raise Jonny Drama up, as a lead character in a new series with a holding deal because they wanted to make sure that no one else would snatch him up. Drama’s hard work had paid off with a rewarding feeling because of his “holding deal” with CBS and that he would now be able to fly out with Vince to Italy. He got the best of both worlds! The funniest parts that showed up throughout the episode was when Vince was consistently hassled by Matt Damon and his cause to help raise money for unfortunate kids in America that do not have enough financial support to eat everyday. It was perfectly played out by Vince on how he was unsure of what type of money would be appropriate to help out a cause with these American stars. These celebrities that accompanied Matt Damon throughout the episode included, LeBron James from the Cleveland Cavaliers and Bano from the band U2. Once Vince arrived to the airport to fly out to Italy in his own personal private jet, he ran into these celebrities that had been hassling him because he only sent the charity ten thousand dollars. Vince got hassled because he asked LeBron James how much he threw down and LeBron said(like the biggest baller), “one mill”. Then Vince started tripping out and asked them how much he should pay and LeBron responds, “Like a buck-five”. Then Matt Damon jumps into the conversation and said, “Ya that’s what I was thinking, at first I was thinking two hundred thousand, but a one hundred and fifty thousand will be fine. Eric arrived announcing his engagement with Sloan and why he needed to write a hundred and fifty thousand dollar check. Vince responded, “It’s for the kids”. Vince and Drama boarded the plane before take off to Italy; in which, Turtle was going to meet them there flying from New Zealand to Italy. The conversation between Drama and Vince was an attention-grabbing moment as they both watched Eric kiss his fiancĂ© Sloan outside the airplane window.

Vince: Well that guys down for the count

Drama: Which one of us do you think will be next?

Vince: I have no idea Johnny

After commentary: the episode ended, a short clip of Matt Damon showed him freaking out at the end, leaving Vince multiple emotional voicemails because he hadn’t received the check from him. Most likely Eric didn’t write the check because he was getting it on with his soon to be wife. This episode was an all-around, good episode and it had a great ending, especially, when Ari’s compromises with his business and Lloyd’s new promotion as an Agent. The best part was when Ari came into his office with a paintball gun and shot everyone with his gun who was fired, it was hilarious!

A Day at the Library in a Windowless Room

Sitting in a large room at the library on the third floor, I began to pull out my required textbooks for my various classes and stacked each book on top of each other onto the large roundtable. Trying to get back into the swing of things has never been so difficult this Sunday morning. My and thoughts imagination today have been nothing but distractions. In the last twenty minuets, I have opened my books and started new Word documents but trying to get into school mode seems to be one of the toughest things for me right now. Although my phone is completely broken and useless, I am at the library away from all the distractions at my house and I have all of my needed materials ready to use; I cannot seem to get anything done yet.

Switching back and forth between all of the Internet distractions such as, Facebook, E-mail, and other websites that are irrelevant to my schoolwork has never been easier. It is a horrible habit and it really frustrates me when I get so caught up in discriminating. When I find my self in this predicament, writing in this blog has made it so much easier for me to get my mind warmed up to begin my homework assignments. However, I am sort of depressed being in this large room without windows or at the library. I’d way rather be outdoors enjoying this amazing fall weather, but when I have such a heavy load of work, I tend to find my self here a lot.

It is this time of the year when everything becomes very busy at school, but the weather cools down and I start to become more active. Trips to the golf course are a must when the weather is in the mid-seventies/eighties. There is nothing better than taking a part of the day off to go with a group of friends to go practice golf. In my opinion, golfing is one of the best things to do outdoors in Tucson when the weather is perfect. On the other hand, looking forward to the next season has never sounded so appealing. The refreshing white snow that falls from the sky is what makes the winter season so special. Particularly, winter means it is finally time to snowboard.

Snowboarding is by far my favorite thing to do during the winter season. There is no greater feeling than putting on my snowboard pants, socks, boots, beanie, gloves, goggles and jacket. Instantly, I started flashing back to so many good moments at different ski resorts around the country. There I was, at the base of the mountain, ready to venture my way to the ski lifts. Strapping into my Ride LX bindings, I fit comfortably on my Ride Serum snowboard. My front right foot was snug into place as I attached my leash to the shoelaces of my thirty-two snowboard boots. I then took a giant push for mankind, it was a push that smoothly glided me across the ever so perfect snow; in which; eventually I gained enough momentum to make it to the ski lift line. The ski resort employee scanned my ski lift pass and it was time for my best friends and I to prepare for the chair lift to swoop us up to the top of the mountain. This is exactly where I need to be right now…

My Favorite TV Show: Entourage

BALLIN' OUTTA CONTROL!

The HBO channel has done extraordinarily well with the hit comedy series Entourage. I was glued to my television screen from the first episode that had aired at 10:30 P.M that Sunday. The creator/producer, Doug Ellin, in partnership with Mark Wahlberg and the other big producers create a spectacular story that takes a look at the day-to-day life of Vincent Chase, his entourage, and the baller lifestyle in the spotlight. The intense rollercoaster of the celebrity lifestyle has proved to the crew that life changes but friends don’t. Vince Chase brought his 3 closest friends with him from Queens, NY: half-brother Drama, manager Eric (or “E”), and his friend Turtle. Vince’s super-agent Ari Gold brings an ecstatic vibe of energy that brings the show all together. Also featured on the new episodes of Entourage are series regulars such as the long-suffering Mrs. Gold; Ari's long-suffering assistant Lloyd, who's seeking a promotion; Andrew Klein, Ari's former mentor and new partner; and Sloan, Eric's on-again, off-again girlfriend. Returning guest stars include Jamie-Lynn Sigler; Ari's other partner Babs; Vince's publicist Shauna; and Bow Wow as Charlie, Eric's old client. Other famous celebrities such as, Bob Saget, 50 Cent, Hugh Hefner, Matt Damon, Tom Brady, and many other famous icons have appeared on the show.

The series draws on the experiences of industry insiders to illustrate both the heady excesses of today's celebrity lifestyle, as well as the difficulty of finding love and success in the fast track of show biz. Now that the boys are getting used to the perks of stardom, Eric, along with super-agent Ari, keep Vince's star rising while making sound decisions for a long-lasting career in a world of fleeting fame. After watching every episode of each season, this current season has been so good thus far; unfortunately, the season finale is coming up this Sunday. The most recent episode was a phenomenal. It’s got the most beautiful women, it’s got guys talking how guys actually talk, and Hollywood insights that I would never see on any other television show or movie for that matter. This show is by far my favorite series I have ever watched, there is really nothing else like it. I particularly like how everyone is so motivated and no one is overly lazy, and when they are, they get shit for it. In addition to their hard work, they are rewarded with a successful title, fame, and ridiculous amounts of money. What a life! Anyone who has HBO, or has seen Entourage, is crazing about how spectacular this life would be. Also, I do not think there could be anyone better that could pull this show off as well as they have expressed this lifestyle acted out by these talented group of actors. I am looking forward to find out how the season finale is going conclude this sequence of amazing episodes until next fall!!!

Dating back to 1997 when James Bond’s 007 Golden Eye video game (for N64) was the shit! :

September 30, 2009

The current mission takes place in Arkhangelsk, Soviet Union. Today, my name is Bond, James Bond. The mission at hand was to kill my opponents and uncover a secret chemical weapons facility at the Byelomorye Dam. I cock my silenced pp7 and crawled my way down a blue air vent. The air vents spread cold air through my body and I remember the “x” designed metal sealed vents; they had ice sickles frosting around the edges. I opened the vent and jumped down onto the ground into an open stall in the Facility bathroom. I looked down at my secret agent watch and my radar displayed a nearby enemy. My loaded pp7 was ready to go; in which, it was concealed with seven hollow point tips and twelve additional bullets stored in my front right pocket in my black tuxedo. It was time to get down to business; it was neither the place nor the time to have a few shaken martinis. I thought to myself: “Okay Bond, it is time to gank a cloak of under armor, get various weapons and ammunition as possible and rack up some damn kills.” I opened the blue bathroom stall door pointed my gun in front of me and began to walk around the stalls in the middle of the bathroom. As soon as I turned the corner I could hear the first bathroom door open. I knew somebody was coming into the bathroom after I heard a door close by open. I pointed my loaded pp7 as the door opened very swiftly… and… before I knew it I had unleashed my entire ammunition clip of bullets into one out of three other opponents. From the looks of it, the blood was covering the tiled floor and the body covered with bullet hole shots. This opponent was Boris Grishenko. Looks like the Russian didn’t know what had hit him. A voice echoed throughout the building, “ seven more minuets remaining until the time to complete the objective expires.” I had a license to kill, so I decided right then and there, shit was going down and I was about to go on a killing spree. I exited the bathroom and hooked a quick right around the upper-balcony and headed through two double swinging doors and picked up a “RC-P90” and a box of ammunition. I now had two weapons… it was time to unload on these suckas! Suddenly, the doors downstairs opened with an opponent in sight walking towards the staircase. I was amped once I possessed this wooden frame grip in my collection. This akimbo-wielded semi-automatic possessed 80 rounds in each magazine clip (highest bullet capacity in the Facility battle). I aimed for nothing but headshots but the bullets unloaded faster than I had expected. I went through 80 rounds in a matter of 10 seconds; in which, I wasted my enemy. I ran downstairs and strapped on some armor that increased my health by fifty percent. I walked down the halls and unloaded ammunition like nobody’s business. I was going on a major kill streak and I wasn’t sure how well I was doing compared to my opponents. I opened a sliding brown door and out of nowhere, a full on rifle combat had begun. I killed a few during the battle and wounded my last enemy in the course of action. However, I was very hurt myself and needed to split to find some more armor to heal my health. “One minute remaining”, echoed the intercom. There he was, agent 006 in plain view. I reloaded my magazine and ran towards his position. I began to fire upon his direction and was getting closer to him by the second. We both got some good shots at each other, but I needed to get a closer position in order to kill him. For this reason I ran towards him and then… boom! I was dead. NOOOOOOO! How could this have happened I didn’t even see the damn proximity mine, shit! My player display filled with blood and it trickled down my screen. It was over and I had lost to the most legendary “Nintendo 64” game, “James Bond’s: Golden Eye”. I threw down my grey N64 controller that was connected into the console by a cord. I was so close to winning but I lost by one lousy kill… what a disastrous day in the year of 1997 when bestselling game hit the stores.
